?i?To Madge and Clair on their 50th

I'm a little at loss as to what to write for this book the kids are putting together for you. when it comes to early memories of you guys, I'm at a disadvantage - I was only 9 years old when you got married!

Like most 9 year old boys, romance left me quite cold. I was a lot more interested in playing marbles than I was in my big sister's boy friends.

It did seem like Clair was under foot a lot around our house but I didn't think too much of it - after all there wasn't too much to do in Enterprise except stand around and watch mud puddles dry up and in Enterprise, that didn't take too long.

Of course I always tried to sneak into the background of any pictures that were being taken and peek through the keyhole into the front room where you, Madge, and the Hall girls were entertaining boy friends. Mom used to raise cain with me for that but I always had the impression her heart wasn't in it and she felt more like chuckling about it. She probably would have liked to join me and she might have done when no one was looking.

Except for Audrey and Faye, I got better acquainted with my older brother and sisters after they married and moved away than I ever did at home - this hasn't made me love any of you any less however.

I remember when you lived around Saticoy when you first went to work for Montgomery. I was more attached to Bud at that time but I do remember Clair bought a 1928(?) Dodge - mainly because it had hydraulic brakes. It's funny what people remember. I don't even remember if you had any kids or not but I remember what kind of a car you had and those hydraulic brakes.

About the next real contact we had was in King City when I knocked the bearings out of the old Graham car we had. I don't remember what town we were in but I know it was about 100 miles from King City and you came down and towed us home and let Margean live with you til I got discharged from the Navy.

Knowing how thoughtless I've always been, I probably didn't even thank you so I'll take this opportunity to tell you how much I appreciated it

I can't say I ever learned to love King City - I hated that wind with a purple passion - but I don't have any bad memories of it - in fact I used to get quite a kick out of old Al and Curt. I don't think I've ever met a man before or since that was as slow as old Al. He's the only man I ever saw that could take 9 hours to do 15 minutes work and work steady at it the whole time.

Curt used to just about tear me up with his stories and his wild sprees every payday. He was sure a typical old time cowboy.

I had better start bringing this to a close I guess - after all, I don't want to have all the fun. I just want to say that you folks never cease to amaze me with the things you are capable of doing. Even tho I didn't have anything to do with it, I'm just plumb proud of you and look forward to seeing you at your Diamond Anniversary.

      Love Paul
      ?/i?
(letter written to Madge and Clair from Madge's brother, Paul, on their 50th wedding anniversary - 1983)
