(The following is from an e-mail message sent by George Shaw - Aug 2015)

?i?Was raised by his uncle, George Shaw in Fermoy, Co. Cork, Ireland. Went to sea as a boy of only 13 and served on various sailing ships plying the far eastern trade routes in the interests of the HEIC (Honourable East India Company). He became a ship's captain and spent time in Penang and Singapore. For five years thereafter he commanded the King of Burma's private yacht and later worked as a coastal pilot for the P & O Line. In his mid to late 40's as his family responsibilities grew he tired of life at sea and took the position of Marine Surveyor at Pagoda Anchorage, Foochow, China, on behalf of various European marine insurance companies. It was from this port that most of the great tea clippers, including the Cutty Sark, set sail on the race to deliver the first of the season's tea pickings to an anxiously awaiting, mainly British, market.?/i?
