  • Notes
    • August Wilhelm (or William) Ossmen was born in Albrona (or Elbrona), Tjarstad, Sweden.

August had a very rough time as a child. When he was about seven years old in Sweden, his family was so poor that he had to resort to begging to live. When he turned eight, he caught and sold crayfish for a penny each and from that time on, he was able to support himself. He worked on a freighter at sea then worked on a farm where he cut his hand so severely with a hay chopping machine that he had to quit. When his hand healed, he worked at a sawmill, then at a charcoal factory then on another farm. On one job he learned a lot about veterinary medicine.

In 1882, he went to America suffering a bout of scarlet fever in Liverpool, England on the way. He worked at a number of jobs in Illinois until he earned enough money to buy passage to Utah. He arrived in Ogden, Utah in 1883. He was converted to the Mormon Church in 1884. In 1890, he went to Idaho and filed on 160 acres of land. There he raised beets, hay, fruit and livestock. Later he went into the bee business and at one time he had 600 colonies of bees.

In 1898-1900, he went on a Mormon mission to Scandinavia. After returning to Utah, he served in several church positions and was called on a second mission to the western states in 1907. When he returned to Idaho in 1909, he became second counselor in the bishopric. He served until 1918. He went on a short term mission to the southern states in 1925-1926. He also served as president in the 106th quorum of Seventy and later as president of the 130th quorum.

While picking apples, August fell from the tree and broke his arm. He went to the hospital where it was set. They also wrapped his leg, but wrapped it too tightly. He later returned to the hospital with blood poisoning, and died there.
