1908 - Nearly half the city was destroyed in the Great Chelsea Fire of 1908

1973 - The Second Great Chelsea Fire burned 18 city blocks.

About 1917 - An electric streetcar line was constructed along Metairie Road opening the area to greater development.

1920s - Upscale housing was constructed along Metairie Road in an area that later became known as Old Metairie.

1947 - The "Fort Lauderdale Hurricane" hit Metaire flooding much of the city up to 6 feet deep.

1960s - Metairie experienced rapid growth as a result of the "white flight" which occurred as white residents of New Orleans left during the Civil Rights Movement after integration of the public schools. The wide straight Veterans Boulevard was constructed and became a commercial center of the region.

1965 - Hurricane Betsy hit the area causing extensive damage.

1970s and early 1980s - An area of bars and nightclubs opened in the section of Metairie knows as "Fat City" or "Metairie's Bourbon Street".

8 May 1995 - The Louisiana Flood dumped over 20 inches of water on Metarie in twelve hours flooding the city.

29 Aug 2005 - Hurricane Katrina hit the New Orleans area devastating large parts of the region. About 75% of Metarie was flooded.
