?i?JOHN BEAL (BEALE), came from the parish of Hingham, County of Norfolk, Eng., to Hing. in the Massachusetts Bay, in 1638; and on the 18th of Sept. of that year received a grant of land containing six acres on what is now South St., at or near the corner of Hersey St.

Daniel Cushing, the fourth town clerk of our Hing., made the foll. record concerning the arrival of John Beal, Senr., and his family, viz.: "1638. John Beal, shoemaker, with his wife and five sons and three daughters and two servants, came from Old Hingham and settled in New Hingham."

He was admitted a freeman in 1639, and in 1649 and 1659 was chosen to represent the town at the General Court of the Colony.

His first wife, Nazareth Hobart, who was the mother of his children, was a dau. of Edmund and Margaret (Dewey) Hobart. She was b. in Eng. ab. 1600, and d. in Hing. 23 Sept. 1658.

For his second wife he m. March 10, 1659, Mrs. Mary Jacob, the wid. of Nicholas Jacob. She d. in Hing. 15 June, 1681. John d. 1 Apr. 1688. In noticing the death of the latter, David Hobart (s. of Rev. Peter), made the following record: "April 1, 1688, my Uncle John Beal died suddenly." Judge Sewall also wrote under the same date: "Father Beal of Hingham dies, aet. 100 yrs." In his will of 27 Sept. 1687, names ch. and gr. ch., leaving legacies to each.

      4. FHL film 929.273 ST71w "Stone - Gregg Genealogy; the Ancestors and Descendants of Galen Luther Stone and his wife Carrie Morton Gregg," by Alicia Crane Williams (Baltimore; 1987), pp. 65-67:

"JOHN BEAL was born in England, probably in or near Wymondham, co. Norfolk; and died at Hingham, Massachusetts 1 April 1688. His death was noted by David Hobart, "my Uncle John Beal died suddenly": and by Judge Sewell, "Father Beal of Hingham dies, aet. 100 yrs." ("Hingham History," 2:53).

He married first, in Wymondham, co. Norfolk, England, FRANCES RIPPLY, a sister to William Ripley who also came to New England in 1638, probably in the same ship with the Beal family. William Ripley made a deed of gift to Nathaniel Beal. No relationship is given in the deed, but it seems practically certain that Nathaniel Beal (born supposedly in 1629) was the youngest son and child of Frances ("The American Genealogist," 13:262-4).

He married second, at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England, 13 July 1630, NAZARETH (HOBART) TURNER, widow of Robert Turner and daughter of Edmund and Margaret (Dewey) Hobart, baptized at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England, 7 June 1601; died in Hingham, Mass., 23 September 1658. She married first, at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England, 9 November 1626, Robert Turner, who was buried there 7 April 1627 (TAG 13:263). Nasareth was the sister of Rev. Peter Hobart, minister to the settlers of Hingham, Massachusetts. For more information on the Hobart Family, see "History of Hingam," 2:334.

He married third, at Hingham, 10 March 1659, MARY (GILMAN) JACOB, daughter of Edward Gilman of Hingham, co. Norfolk, and widow of Nicholas Jacob. She died in Hingham, 15 June 1681. For more information on the Gilman family, see TAG 11:137-139.

John Beal was probably a first cousin to the John Beal "Jr." of Hingham whose will of 26 October 1657 mentions his father Edmund and some of the children of John Beal senior who are called "cousins." The baptisms of six children of Edmund and Susan (Wright) Beales is recorded at Hingham, co. Norfolk, England. From the marriage dates of Edmund and John Beal Sr. it would appear that they were probably brothers (definitely not father and son as given by Charles Pope in "Pioneers of Massachusetts").

He married, first, June 11, 1616, Frances Ripley, Wymondham, Norfolk, England. He married second, July 13, or 17, about 1628, Nazareth Hobart, widow of Robert Turner, who died April 7, 1627. She was the daughter of Edmund and Margaret Dewey Hobart. Nazareth was bp. June 7, 1601, born 1600.

John Beal came to America on the vessel called the "Diligent" of which John Martin was master, arriving at Boston on the tenth of August, 1638.

Daniel Cushing, one of the early town clerks of Hingham, also came to New England on the "Diligent. " In one of his manuscripts, we find a list of the early settlers of Hing.?/i?
